"You Can't Touch A Ghost:

Five Senses for a Cause"

Presented by Galleri 2987 and Things Feel Heavy

Event Date: Saturday, January 19th, 2019

6-10pm

(After Party at Atwater Brewery)

About the Event:

This Event will be an art and cultural experience, exhibiting fine art from Detroit’s top artists, and artists abroad, along with musical performances, dance performances, a wearable’s runway show, and an auction of a custom piece made for the event, all to raise money for a good cause while showcasing the best of what Detroit and abroad has to offer.

The restorative powers of art and music are undeniable.  They cut through to the most human parts of us, the ghosts we carry with us, and give language and experience to feelings, healing what is often unseen. In creating an experience that engages all the senses with art, performance, music, food and delights, it is our aim to wholly envelope the attendees in an immersive evening, elevating the restorative powers of culture, art, and the celebration of life, while raising awareness and money for those most in need.   As a way to give back to our community, Galleri 2987 and Things Feel Heavy will be donating the proceeds from the night’s event to, “Alternatives For Girls” an organization that provides help, prevention, assistance, shelter, and outreach to high-risk girls and young women.   From their site, “Alternatives for Girls’ Prevention Program serves girls ages 4-18 who are at risk of pregnancy, gang involvement, abusing drugs or alcohol and school truancy. We engage them through after-school programs, a teen leadership program, and a summer camp.  AFG’s Shelter Program provides a stable home, counseling, and life skills training to homeless young women aged 15-21 and their children. The goal is to empower them to lead productive and fulfilling lives.  AFG’s Outreach Program helps teens and women engaged in high-risk activities to understand the risks of such activities and transition to safe choices and healthy lives.  Alternatives For Girls provides services for walk-in clients and any member of the community in crisis, to discuss their needs in private.  And Lastly, Alternatives For Girls also manages a crisis line that puts callers in touch with appropriate area service providers including shelter accommodations and child care assistance.”

The first step for creating a better world is prevention; the next step is provision and help.

Call For Art:

(Opens December 8th 2018- Ends January 6th 2019)

Things Feel Heavy and Galleri 2987 invite you to submit your work. We encourage artists working in any medium, 2D, 3D, performance, dance, wearables, video, etc.   We are looking for artwork centered around the idea of "You Can't Touch a Ghost", or work about the unseen things we feel deeply, that do not necessarily have form or definition.  The process of creating work is often about aestheticizing feelings and emotions, and giving voice to thought.  It is about creating something tangible from the amorphous and undefinable parts of our selves; the essence of what makes us individual and human.  It is the end product of a life lived in varying states, the paths we choose, the encounters we've had, and inversely, all the opposites.  The paths not taken and the ghosts we carry with us.

We are very open to how you might interpret this idea and theme, and largely are looking for very strong work, with well developed concepts.
